Polartropica - single/video release with Disco Shrine, MetronOhm

35923101_794756537396705_4475013300005896192_o.jpg

Join us for POLARTROPICA's GOLDEN SOUL single/video release show celebrations at Bootleg Theater - Bar Stage with magical friends and powerhouses Disco Shrine, MetronOhm // DJ sets by loves WASI + Mini Bear, who will be spinning all the hot fire jams, so get ready to dance the night away!!!

POLARTROPICA
Polartropica is the unconventionally alluring musical endeavor of Los Angeles based, dreamy, galactic space-rock artist, Ihui (eeway) Cherise Wu. Taiwan born and California raised, Wu has created a genre of ethereal synth psychedelia that you’ve never heard before, combining quirky pop melodies, dreamlike-classic string arrangements, and Polartropica’s shimmering vocals. Debut EP 'ASTRODREAMS' was released on Lolipop Records, and they are currently releasing a set of singles leading to their full album release later this year.

Disco Shrine
Jessica Delijani is the LA based, pop spark plug behind Disco Shrine. True to her tongue-in-cheek moniker, Disco Shrine makes music that plays around with high energy electronic beats and sensual melodies.

MetronOhm
Much of the music that’s prefixed by “alt-” in the R&B pop worlds relies merely on production or cult of personality rather than actual imagination. Which is why Bay Area-bred MetronOhm has been charming listeners since they alighted in L.A. Sparked by the creative chemistry of Annabelle Maginnis and Kofi Asare-Aboagye (aka Mike Blair), MetronOhm stirs the soul with a playful, sultry mix of jazz, R&B, folk and hip-hop, and they do it with instruments like violin, mandolin, guitar, sax, cello and pocket piano, with vibrant lyricism to boot. -Buzzbands.LA

DJ sets by:
WASI
WASI is an electro-punk, riot pop band based out of Los Angeles. Originally formed as a dynamic duo from SoCal, Jessie Meehan and Merilou Salazar create a reminiscent pop soundtrack to those nights of angsty garage punk shows and skinny dipping at the beach.

Founding members Merilou Salazar and Jessie Meehan's activism is a core essence of WASI's liberating energy. Salazar, co-founder of nationwide festival Women Fuck Shit Up Fest, and Meehan, who partnered with the ACLU in getting corporate conglomerate WALGREENS to pass a gender neutral restroom policy after a discrimination incident, question the status quo in their music and lifestyles.

Mini bear
A creator of nostalgic, romantic pop steeped in 80s vibes, mini bear is the solo project of L.A. native songwriter and producer Lauren Kop. Taking inspiration from both past and future, mini bear uses analog synth textures and modern technology to write layered songs with syncopated rhythms and sentimental melodies. Lyrics meditate on technology’s influence on human connection and emotional detachment in our evolving technopop culture. Inspired by the music of early Madonna, Eurythmics, and Janet Jackson, it is dance-pop soaked in synths and funky drum samples.

mini bear released her EP Mind Control via her label New Professor Music in the fall of 2016. Shaped by the heaviness of 2017, mini bear has a treasure trove of new synth-gems to release in 2018.

PLAG PRESENTS:

BROOKLYN INDIE ARTISTS JOIN L.A. BASED VAVÁ
FOR SHOW AT HOTEL CAFE

Singer/Songwriters Maria Neckam and Lucia “Loosh” Stavros tour the West Coast from LA to Vancouver, joining forces with L.A.’s guitar whiz VAVÁ for a show May 25th 10pm at Hotel Cafe. The show is being presented by PLAG Presents, an LA-based collective that works to elevate the voices of women and nonbinary people in the arts.

VAVÁ is Vanessa Wheeler, formerly of the band LeoLeo. Since gaining attention from her posts on instagram, she has opened for break-out artist like Lauren Ruth Ward, and has toured nationally with The Dear Hunter and The Family Crest (winter, 2017.) Her music is made up of subconscious micro-references to Vanessa’s major influences (Brazilian, Black American, pop, rock, and progressive musical genres), which are then filtered through her guitaristic, composer/songwriter brain. Often difficult to categorize, her music has been called “genre smashing” and “jaw-dropping,” (Buzzlands LA), and “the offspring of musical genes taken from Sia, Florence, and St. Vincent (Blurred Culture.) vavamusique.com

Maria Neckam is an Austrian-born, Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter, who has made a name for herself as a highly unique and versatile voice. She has been praised by the press -- from the New York Times to NPR's "A Blog Supreme," and Le Monde in France -- as a "trailblazer," and "natural wonder." Maria has released three well received albums under her own name and is preparing the release of her fourth, produced by Jon Cowherd (Brian Blade & the Fellowship) and Steve Wall (Lucius, Meshell Ndegéocello). Her songs fall into the realm of indie pop - with an alternative edge, reminiscent of such artists as Feist, Regina Spektor and Ani DiFranco. marianeckam.com

Loosh describes her brand of music as, “progressive rock stylings and deep grooves with uncharted harmonic movement on harp,” Delivering distinctly feminist and political themes, Loosh performs what she calls “superBitch rock,” with searing wide-range vocals. Loosh performs all original material including selections from the debut album scheduled for release in 2018 by her five-piece band Green and Glass. A former Fulbright Scholar for music studies in Paris, Stavros has performed internationally in distinguished venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, and The Universität der Künste in Berlin. looshmusic.com

PLAG PRESENTS at Harvard & Stone

Harvard & Stone
THURSDAY, November 30th,

:: Maiah Manser::

Noir-Pop songstress, Maiah Manser dissolves differences and builds bridges between the worlds of automation and nature. The grit and the raw in lyrics combined with her hauntingly powerful vocals, drive together to create a chilling sensation that is both concrete and abstract, in sound and in concept.

Manser discovered her love of music at the age of four while attending preschool in Bend, Oregon where she was raised by her grandmother and single mother, who had escaped her father. With a fierce independence that stems from the feminine energy she was surrounded by, Manser taught herself to play the piano and violin and eventually fled Oregon for Cornish College of the Arts. As a student, she met Mary Lambert; that chance meeting opened the door for an opportunity to tour with Lambert as a backing vocalist, opening for artists like Sam Smith, Ariana Grande and Pharrell Williams. At 20 years old she started her professional career as a solo artist.

In 2016, Manser got her taste of the festival life, shining on both the main stage of Capitol Hill Block Party and on the Mural Stage at Bumbershoot Music Festival alongside artists like Bishop Briggs, CHVRCHES, Odesza, and Crystal Castles.

:: Hayley and the Crushers

You went to the beach to get a tan but were rudely interrupted by a gaggle of leather-clad beasts feasting on beer and ho-hos under the pier. Welcome to THE CRUSHERVERSE!

Razorcake Magazine digs the San Luis Obispo, CA trio's latest release, "JEWEL CASE:" "These are syrupy sweet surf pop punk songs covering hooking up in the backseat, mermaids, gltter and young love." Pork Magazine gives a sweaty thumbs up: "punchy, punky young oldies sound reminecent of the Go-Gos .... with a sound that says drive-in movies, bubblegum, lazy beach days, and mild teenage bad behavior."

:: Cusi Coyllur

Cusi Coyllur, (coo-see coy-your), an Inca princess name, is the dark, experimental solo project of pianist, singer and mental health advocate, Shannen Roberts. “Woke Up From a Lazy Dream” music video shows the hazy, mind-altered world she, her friends and partner at the time struggled to leave and depicts her panic attacks.

“It never feels like I’m in control of my body or my thoughts when I have a panic attack and it’s as if someone else has entered my body and is forcing it to shake, hyperventilate and scream,” said Shannen.

When writing the song, she remembered when her friends at a music school in high school revealed they had tried to commit suicide or were depressed and took drugs to cope. It was a scary realization that she was overwhelmingly not alone at the time in how she felt and dealt with it. “Bipolar Lovers in Love,” her upcoming EP, expresses the extreme polarities of her life, past destructive relationships and is a tribute to her healing journey thus far.

PLAG PRESENTS at Harvard & Stone

Harvard & Stone
THURSDAY, August 31st

9PM

:: Doctrin ::

A Melbournian goth amidst the Los Angeles sun, Doctrin is the moniker of porcelain Australian, Dolly Denko. Relocating to California as an artist and producer, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Denko brings it all together in the studio under her own intricate compositions to create the powerfully capricious breeze of Doctrin.

Bringing a lustful presence to the stage alongside her live band, Doctrin delivers a powerfully honest performance during such nights; with a range of layering and effects, Denko herself wails in both vocals and grungy guitar riffs that are reminiscent of the 90’s alternative anthems.

LISTEN ---> https://the-pinks.bandcamp.com/releases

:: Sugar Rum Tantrum

Sugar Rum Tantrum premieres as the Los Angeles folk-mischief-rambunction helmed by accordionist-songwriter Melinda West (Sugar Rum). A decade ago, Sugar Rum began her pursuits as a rock cabaret-inclined street performer. Eventually, the band stumbled down the rabbit hole of songwriting, incorporating tango, gypsy folk, stride, and blues into a tasty concoction. This four-piece spook folk band, frequently known to accompany the occasional fire performance or interpretive dancer, is making its debut with an EP release expected in October 2016.
